Rhino’s Ramblings - Turkey Day
By Robert Thomas Opinion/Commentary
Another year has gone by and we find ourselves pulling out the sharp knives, forks and recipe books.
The little blue marble we all call home has made it around the sun for another year and it’s time to carve the turkey.
The feast and famine year so many of us have endured over the past year as affordability to put food on the table has hit so many of us hard.
We have seen the local Moose Jaw and District Food Bank being hit with ever growing need for donations as they went through some tough times as demand has outstripped supply.
Far too many people - working people - have had to turn to the Food Bank just to get by.
Despite this for some reason just surviving for another year is enough to be thankful for.
Perhaps there isn’t the bounty we once saw on our tables but here is hoping you got by.
For myself personally I look at the little things I find enjoyment in as Thanksgiving hits us once again.
Diabetes prevents me from enjoying the great pig out I would have this time of year and consuming an endless amount of pumpkin pie is not in the cards.
My great fall desire is just not there this year.
With that said I did have that one little pleasure as the concession at the Kinsmen Sports Complex gifted me a pumpkin pie tart.
That one forbidden treasure was so good and something I truly enjoyed.
It was the perfect size to fit my diet. And much appreciated.
I think back to May of this year with my heart giving out and hospitalization hitting me as my body was giving up on life.
Life at times boils down to 11 medications and 17 pills a day. Plus a few jabs to monitor. I’m thankful for the freedom medication brings and I can still afford it.
I’m thankful to still be able to put together at least a few stories to not just get to the bottom of things but hopefully keep you informed.
It’s not much and at times I feel embarrassed for my small output as I avoid stress - under my doctor’s advice - and move ahead.
There is so much that needs to be written about in the community that now is being missed.
Everything from children’s athletics to the City’s closed door antics when it comes to the games surrounding two properties on the 100 block of Manitoba Street West.
But the highlight of the year for me really boils down to a simple and very tasty pumpkin pie tart. Its simplicity but also perfection plus so damn good.
A forbidden pleasure in an otherwise sea of so much “you can’t eat that.”
It got me thinking about perhaps the year may have been more expensive to make it through but at the same time the little things out there over the year are the things we should be thankful for.
The little good things are also to be thankful for.
Have a great Turkey Day and Weekend with friends and family.
